    Marketing data company Claritas has acquired adtech service ArtsAI. Claritas runs an "identity graph" which lets advertisers target consumers based on what else they do on their devices; ArtsAI uses AI to optimise advertising delivery. Terms of the deal weren't given. ArtsAI's CRO, Erik Lundberg, told Podnews: "When you start thinking about the possibilities of merging our advanced AI personalization with their identity and data graph, it's really phenomenal."

He appears to gently criticise Spotify; suggesting that it's a mistake to go after Hollywood talent, and discussing the slowness of decisions at the company.     Hernán López, the former CEO of Wondery, has been convicted of wire fraud and money laundering conspiracies while working for 21st Century Fox. Awaiting sentence, López faces up to 40 years in prison and millions of dollars in penalties. A lawyer for López said that they will appeal. López left Fox in 2016 before founding Wondery, which was sold to Amazon at the end of 2020. There's no suggestion that Fox, Wondery or Amazon were involved.

    What happens if you make a show and put it live without any marketing at all? Danny Brown tells Podnews that following a story about white noise being popular… "I launched a white noise podcast on June 15, and put zero promotion or marketing behind it. No sharing, no talking about it to anyone, nothing. Just under 3 months later, it had reached 1,000 downloads with over 400 unique listeners. It's not a huge amount, but does show that maybe a new show in a popular niche can still get results with zero marketing."

    Following the acquisition of Podchaser by Acast, Acast's Ross Adams and Podchaser's Bradley Davis will be on the Podland podcast this Thursday. Meanwhile, Mathew Passy wonders if the acquisition enables Acast to "spam more podcasters", Matt Cundill wonders whether to keep information on Podchaser, and Blubrry's Todd Cochrane says he'll pull all his shows because of Acast's "spamming and poaching". Acast tell us the acquisition is "completely unrelated to our email marketing strategy"; and we would also note that Acast doesn't appear to have sent a cold email marketing campaign, to anyone, since mid-June. Perhaps they've heard us.

    Transistor's Justin Jackson has reported Acast to Canadian law enforcement and to Acast's email service provider, after the company targeted Transistor customers. Acast's email provider says that Acast's use is against its terms of service, and Jackson - who has previously worked for an email company - considers the emails are illegal under Canadian law. The company has recently targeted customers from Podbean, Captivate, Blubrry and others, using competitor's logos, and sending multiple follow-up messages to each podcaster. A spokesperson for Acast tells Podnews that the emails are "part of our continuing marketing strategy, which we don't currently plan to change".

    Subscription podcast company Luminary has raised a further $30m in a funding round, but the company is 'struggling' and only has 80,000 subscribers says Bloomberg. The story claims that Luminary, which has raised $160m so far, was losing $3.5m a month before the pandemic set in. "The company has cut spending on marketing, new shows and staff."

    Exclusive: Podio, the "Middle East's Leading Podcasting Platform", has released a report into the podcast industry in Lebanon and Levant. The report says that fewer than 100 podcasts are being produced in the region; and 48% of listeners want to listen to local content, but don't do so. Fewer than 6% of independent podcasters in the area have generated revenue from their podcast: but there is sudden hype for podcasting there, and marketing spend is expected to rise significantly.     Podcast advertising works better - with listeners 34% more likely to buy, according to a new white paper from data marketing company Claritas. That increase in 'conversion lift' is just 2.6% for other advertising like print and live TV. The paper also says that coupon codes and "vanity URLs" miss the majority of actual conversions.

    At the recent Madrid Podcast Day, Spanish podcast app iVoox was poised to launch a second round of iVoox Originals: unlike other podcast platforms, iVoox works with existing popular Spanish podcasts to move them exclusively inside the iVoox app. Speaking to Podnews, the company says that increased visibility inside the app and marketing for each podcast quickly replaces any loss of audience from removing them from other platforms, and podcasters also get a guaranteed minimum fee based on active subscribers.
