US podcast ad spend up by almost a quarter

• MediaRadar suggests that US podcast advertising spend increased by almost a quarter in the first five months of 2021. The number of advertisers also increased 15%.

• After advising younger listeners not to get vaccinated, advice criticised by White House officials, Joe Rogan has said he has COVID-19. We hope he gets better soon.

• Apple has been forced to allow media apps to link to websites for payment. The change should allow simpler methods to pay for third-party content that isn’t subject to Apple’s 30% commission. The new policy takes effect in early 2022.

• Spotify is now producing the audio section of US airline Delta’s in-flight seatback entertainment. The service contains mixtapes of music, and 42 podcast series including Gimlet’s Science Vs, The Ringer’s The Dave Chang Show and WSJ/Gimlet’s The Journal, as well as Crime Junkie (which isn’t a Spotify show). Spotify’s original deal with Delta was announced two years ago: at that time it was podcast-only, and Delta was seeing around 16.5m passengers every month; JetBlue also signed with Spotify in November 2019. Podcasts are also on other airlines.

• Launched last month, Snippet calls itself 'the world’s first short-form podcast publisher’, producing high-quality shows that are 20 minutes or less. (They’re hiring).

• Cisneros Interactive, which is the exclusive sales house for Spotify’s audio ads in sixteen Latin American countries, is now fully-owned by Entravision.

• Podopi is a new website that “helps you get more value out of your blog by creating a podcast from it without effort on your part”.

• Podcast consultant Dave Jackson has a Zoom meeting tonight (9.00pm Eastern) about podcasting and Bitcoin. We’ll be taking part.

• Podnews has published its first ranker - the people and companies who we’ve written about over the past 90 days. The data will update monthly. The top 3 is dominated by podcasting’s heavy hitters - a comedian and UFC commentator, a podcast researcher, and a podfather.

• Wondery is hiring a Head of EU, Podcast Content, based in London.
