Are you bigger than a Netflix show?

• Netflix published consumption data for more than 18,000 shows for Jan-June 2023. We pulled the data in, and wondered how podcasts compare. So to compare your podcast to a Netflix show, we have written a quick comparison tool. You might be surprised at how big you are.

• Tink Media has launched Podcast Group Therapy, a paid-for group session on marketing your show. The idea is to make podcast marketing accessible to all.

• Download hours for Paramount Audio were up by 8% this year, writes EVP of Podcasting and Audio at Paramount, Steve Raizes, looking back at the company’s success.

• Mother Jones and The Center for Investigative Reporting are to merge. The Center for Investigative Reporting produces Reveal with PRX, which averages 825,000 downloads per month. The merger should create more opportunities for the podcast.

• Listening app Podfans has rebranded to TrueFans. Founder and CEO Sam Sethi said on the Podnews Weekly Review podcast last week: “We do more than just straight podcasts. We were obviously looking at music. We’re looking at books, video, and so, talking to several music artists, they said Podfans doesn’t really say music to us and it’s a bit narrow focused.”

The Tech Stuff - with RSS․com

• Music Freediverse is a new place for musicians to post their songs as an RSS feed, using PeerTube.

• If you’re a website for podcasting without an RSS feed, are you really a website for podcasting? On desktop, the Podnews website now proudly displays RSS feeds in the header - for news, events, jobs, articles, press releases and more. Like, subscribe, follow, etc.

• Podnews is on Mastodon (and other places), and this holiday period, we’d like to encourage you to follow us there (and the hashtag #podcasting perhaps, too). Megalodon works great for Android; we’re told Mammoth is a good app for iPhone. As of today, we’re posting on X thirty minutes late, as part of the x-last strategy.

In Australia, the ABC’s Tales from the Tinny has made its last episode - after 17 years and almost 800 shows. ABC News interviews the hosts: “While the show was about fishing, it was also about creating a space for the Northern Territory’s recreational fishing community.” The last episode is five HOURS long - might as well go out with a bang…

From iHeartPodcasts, Doghouse Pictures and Will Packer Media, Fight Night is to be made into a TV show for Peacock. It’ll be made by Universal Television. The show is the story of how an armed robbery during the night of Muhammad Ali’s historic 1970 comeback fight changed not only one man’s life, but an entire city’s destiny.

Africana Woman has launched “LEMBA: The Africana Authors Space,” dedicated to celebrating and spotlighting the remarkable contributions of female African authors to literature and culture. The show is from Zambia.

’Tis The Grinch Holiday Podcast is to be back next year, after Wondery greenlit a second season. The popular podcast currently holds the #1 rank within the Kids & Family category on Amazon Music. Wondery’s Marshall Lewy said: “The Grinch told me that he found being a talk show host was a surprisingly satisfying experience! We look forward to bringing him back for more Grinchy snark next holiday season.”

Truer Crime has been acquired by Tenderfoot TV. Creator, writer and host Celisia Stanton has returned for a three-episode “Truer Crime” prequel series, in advance of season two slated for Spring 2024.

Smeg! A lot of current comics have a soft-spot for Red Dwarf - and to reflect that, Better Than Life: A Red Dwarf Podcast launched on Friday. It’s an episode-by episode breakdown of classic sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf, featuring a rogue’s gallery of awesome guest comedians. The first season features Nick Helm, Bec Hill, Sooz Kempner, Guy Kelly, Matt Blair and Paul Foxcroft.
