Spreaker is now the #2 podcast hosting company by new episode releases, according to Livewire. (Since Spreaker now supports podping, Livewire can more reliably see all new episodes released on the platform). Spotify for Podcasters is still the most popular; the rest of the top five are Buzzsprout, Omny Studio and Podbean.

A significant jump for Spreaker is seen in the share of new podcast episodes in March, according to Livewire. Spreaker’s use of Podping, a simple mechanism to advertise new published episodes, may be the reason why. Podbean overtook Spotify’s Megaphone to claim #6.

Exclusive: The Podcast Show in London has all gone a bit Pete Tong - the renowned DJ has been announced as the host of the Spreaker and Triton Digital official party. A number of speakers for The Podcast Show have also been announced: including Will Pearson and Carrie Lieberman from iHeartPodcasts, Alison Lomax, YouTube’s UK Managing Director, and Richard Knight, the Director of Audio for BBC Studios. Libsyn has added support for podcast transcripts. Users can upload a transcript in SRT or VTT format. Need one making? Libsyn’s competitor Spreaker offers a website (and desktop app) offering free podcast transcription for everyone.

As one open standard gets integrated by Apple (the transcript), another has been integrated by Spreaker. The company now supports podping, a near-instant way of communicating to podcast directories that you’ve published a new episode. Already supported by companies like Buzzsprout, Blubrry, Transistor, RSS.com and Captivate (and us!), the addition of Spreaker adds a signficant number of shows, says John Spurlock.

The Podcast Show London is to return this May, and the event organisers have released the first set of speakers and more detail on the event. A new feature this year will be The Creator Village, sponsored by Spreaker: a special space for creators including a pop-up podcast studio, a business advice and feedback hub, and a Creator Stage with talks. A free podcast transcription tool has been launched. It runs entirely on your own local device ("for the highest privacy and security"), the company says; it uses whisper.cpp's "tiny" model. It's powered by Spreaker, though you don't need to be a customer to use it. It hosts the SRT file itself, which is ideal to add it to your RSS feed.

Hmm: Spreaker's "free professional hosting", promised in a press release that Podnews covered on Friday, appears to be just a small tweak to the company's already existing free plan. After the press release's title, "Spreaker goes free", and the first paragraph, "Starting today, creators can use Spreaker’s professional podcast platform at zero cost," we were misled into believing this was a new offer. Sorry.

Podcast hosting company Spreaker is now free, claiming that it is "the first ever professional-level podcast platform" to be available at no cost. Features like unlimited storage and programmatic monetisation, previously only available in an enterprise package from the iHeart-owned platform, are now free for all podcast creators. The release describes existing free alternatives as "mediocre" and "very basic". Here's a deep-dive into their platform from Sounds Profitable.

Spreaker has partnered with Musixmatch to offer transcriptions for podcasts. Creators hosted on Spreaker will be able to automatically transcribe their podcasts; it uses the podcast:transcript feature to appear in supporting podcast apps.

Spreaker is the latest podcast hosting company to support transcripts. Using the podcast:transcript tag, it allows podcasts to publish transcripts and captions which are shown by a growing number of podcast apps.

The Projection Booth Podcast is celebrating its twelfth anniversary this year. Mike White, the host, tells us it is the only independently produced podcast that consistently places in the Top 20 of Apple Podcasts’ Film History chart. It's on Spreaker.

First look: Spreaker has launched a programmatic ad quality tool, dubbed MAGDA, which automatically checks ad categories to make sure they're accurate. Sounder has announced it is to close its podcast hosting platform, as it focuses on brand safety and contextual targeting. There are currently 5,425 podcasts hosted on Sounder, according to the Podcast Index. The company is moving "many of our largest creators" to Spreaker; Co-host is offering 6 months free (go here).

A hospital has been flooded with tens of thousands of angry phone calls, after a Spreaker podcaster told his listeners to call the healthcare facility and doxxed some individual workers - the calls blocked other communication about patient care. It's one of a number of podcasts that the Tech Transparency Project allege, incorrectly, that "Apple is hosting". (The podcast is also listed, but blocked from recommendation, on Google Podcasts).

More than a quarter of new podcast episodes published in April were on Anchor, according to data from John Spurlock: Spotify's free podcast host was responsible for 25.8% of all new podcast episodes in April, breaking 25% for the first time. The rest of the top five were Buzzsprout, Spreaker, Libsyn, and at #5, Podbean which overtook Omny Studio last month. More ranking detail in The Tech Stuff, below.

Podcast host Anchor's creator interface is now available in 35 different languages. Of the top five podcast hosts, Omny Studio is in six languages, Spreaker available in four; Buzzsprout and Libsyn only offer English, though YouTube is in 82 different languages. It's unclear whether support is available in all of them. Podcasting is growing faster in non-English languages.

Anchor, Buzzsprout and Spreaker were the podcast hosting companies who published the most new episodes in March. John Spurlock's monthly data shows a significant rise for Libsyn (possibly due to the launch of Libsyn Studio, its free podcast hosting alternative).

Looking at podcast hosts ordered by new episodes in February, there's no change in the top five, but iHeart's Spreaker has seen a significant increase in new episodes published: up by 16%.

Spreaker has worked with Meta to produce a new, simplified way to add your podcast to Facebook. It uses a new API. Currently, podcasts on Facebook are only available within the US and on mobile.

Google is randomly switching podcasts in its app to point to pirated copies with ads. Jason Calcanis noticed his podcast, All-In, mysteriously had ads in it; Google's Danny Sullivan replied: "we appear to have mistakenly pointed to a duplicate version of the podcast": a pirated copy held on Spreaker, according to Nathan Gathright. "There are loads of benefits from our constantly checking for new RSS feeds and trying to make our own determination about which feed to use for a given show algorithmically, but we've also seen instances where we get it wrong," a Google spokesperson told us in July last year. Podnews offers a Google Podcasts RSS helper so you can check what RSS feed Google has for your podcast; we would also suggest you claim your podcast and then set the preferred feed. Last month, Spreaker also prematurely closed a 10-year promotion for free hosting. It had offered that with iHeart in July 2013.

It's open source and available for anyone.

iHeartMedia is to acquire Voxnest. Voxnest will provide dynamic ad serving for iHeartRadio's podcasts and analytics. Voxnest also owns Spreaker, the 6th largest podcast host with 61,000 shows, and BlogTalkRadio, with a further 8,300. Terms weren't disclosed.

Voxnest's Spreaker has partnered with Deezer to increase the amount of podcasts available on Deezer's platform, especially in Latin America. The region has a population of 640m people, and is experiencing rapid growth in streaming services. (We also list Deezer's submission page in our big list of where to add your podcast).

Podcasting solution provider Voxnest announces today that it has partnered with DAX to help monetise UK audiences. Voxnest customers, including those on the company’s Spreaker platform, now have the benefit of DAX monetisation, while advertisers can take advantage of advanced targeting and measurement solutions. Voxnest President Francesco Baschieri says: “It’s an exciting time to be involved in this medium, and we’re confident that our easy-to-use, efficient and scalable solution for creating, monetizing and distributing audio content will have a catalyzing effect on creators worldwide.”

Voxnest's Spreaker Studio now supports Siri shortcuts, the company has announced. Ready-to-use shortcuts include "Record Audio", which triggers audio capture.

Event: the Vancouver Podcast Festival is at the end of this week (Nov 8-10). Here, for example, is just one of the sessions, including speakers from Podnews supporters Spreaker/Voxnest, Himalaya, and The Podcast Exchange.

In data shared with Podnews, Voxnest says that, on average, 9.4% of all podcast downloads on its platform are on an Apple Watch device. The 'humps' in the graph above, where the percentage rises to over 13%, are related to weekends. Voxnest's tools include Spreaker, catering to independent podcasters, Hive, a turnkey platform for enterprises, and Dynamo, a standalone monetisation solution. Apple Watches gained the option to play podcasts in mid September.

Buzzfeed News reports that Apple has now removed Alex Jones's podcasts from its platform, saying "Apple does not tolerate hate speech". Previously, Spotify had removed specific episodes. Infowars content has additionally been removed from Stitcher, Facebook, YouTube and Pinterest. Spreaker, who describe themselves as the "secondary host" of the podcast, have also removed the podcast from their listings: "it violates our Terms and Service Conditions because of Hate Speech," said a spokesperson for the company. Spreaker's action will effectively pull it off most third-party podcast apps. In a response, the radio host claims "this is the modern day electronic equivalent of book burning"; as of press time, his self-hosted RSS feed is still available.

On Aug 1, we reported that Spotify was under pressure for hosting The Alex Jones Show Podcast. AP reports that the company has now 'removed specific episodes', citing hate content. Most episodes remain. Apple Podcasts and Google Podcasts, among others, still appear to link to all available episodes. The podcast is hosted with Spreaker.

Podcast host Transistor launched yesterday, offering hosting, analytics, and distribution for folks who are using podcasts to build their brand and grow their audience. It became #1 on Product Hunt; and has posted guides on their product's features vs Anchor, vs Spreaker and Simplecast. They've also added a article on how to find an idea for your show.
