UK newspapers pass off podcast interview as their own

Earlier this month, A Life Lived, produced by Muddy Knees Media for Audioboom, featured a chat with Sir Roger Moore’s daughter Deborah. A story in The Daily Star, then The Daily Express, The Sun, the Daily Mail and Metro, all quoted from the podcast without any credit - the story even making the front page. Unlike the Australian plagiarism example from Monday, the newspapers didn’t even acknowledge she was speaking in a podcast, leading many to erroneously think the Daily Star had got the scoop.

An adblocker that works on podcasts (and radio) has been featured by Vice: using crowd-sourced audio signatures to spot the ads. One small problem: it can’t recognise host-read ads yet. (For noting: Vice’s website makes over 100 calls to ads or web-bugs while publicising this tool.)

Amazon has announced new podcast integration for their Alexa smart speaker service. US users will now be able to ask for podcasts on Spotify - “Hey Alexa, play My Favorite Murder on Spotify” - as well as adding a preferred podcast setting so that you can pick your default podcast provider. If you listen to content through Spotify, SiriusXM or iHeartRadio, Alexa will sync progress between individual speakers, too. (Here’s how to set up Spotify on Alexa).

Paradiso, a new international podcast studio, has launched. The company, made from executives from French pay-TV operator Canal Plus, entertainment company Konbini and ad company Havas, aims to produce twelve series by the end of next year for platforms like Spotify, Audible, Majelan and Sybel, in a variety of languages. They’re already producing shows for Spotify and Sybel.
- Elsewhere in business: Audity is a new podcast company in Konstans Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Bill Burr and Al Madrigal’s All Things Comedy has announced a partnership with Wondery. Red Herring focuses on Acast’s recent expansion to Germany. And Vox Media has bought New York Magazine.
