Voxnest: Spotify conquers Europe for podcasting

  • Voxnest claim that Spotify is now more popular than Apple Podcasts in most of continental Europe, South and Central America: Spotify claimed another six countries in September, the company says, based on listener data from the Voxnest Audience Network. The main holdouts are the US, Canada, the UK and Australia (all countries where Apple has around 50% market share).

  • Voxnest has also partnered with Audion, an audio technology company based in France, to be a European ad partner for Voxnest’s dynamic ad insertion technology. “We believe dynamic ad insertion will only continue to become more and more popular, and we’re thrilled to really kick it up a notch for our European users,” Voxnest told us.

  • NPR has two apps - one called NPR One, and one called simply NPR. In 2020, expect those to be merged into one new app: Current says there may be something to try in May; sounds like it’s a political split, rather than a technological one. (You can listen to Podnews in NPR One).

  • In the UK, the Daily Mail has announced Mail+, a premium subscription service for readers of the newspaper. Mail+ users, who can sign up for free, will gain access to a live radio show and some exclusive podcasts.

  • Spreaker have added a one-click distribution point of Podcast Addict, which they call the most popular podcast app on Android. (Here’s where to add your podcast whoever you host with - you can listen to Podnews on Podcast Addict, of course).

  • Event: PodFest China will take place in Shanghai, China on November 9th. Featuring both Chinese and American podcasters, the not-for-profit event attracted 200 podcasters in January for their first conference.
