Thank you, Anne, in the USA! She became our 11,000th email subscriber at 2.58am our time this morning. Welcome also to recent subscribers from Canada’s Elmnt FM, NPR, Australia’s Network Ten, Belgium’s VRT, Warner Music and NBC Universal.

  • CBC/Radio-Canada and Acast have announced a podcasting sales partnership, allowing Acast to sell advertising and sponsorship to clients outside of Canada. Acast are already helping monetise other public service broadcasters, including the BBC and Radio New Zealand.

  • The subject of Serial season 1, Adnan Syed’s case will not be heard by the US Supreme Court after an appeal was denied. No reason has been given.

  • “Advances in technology since podcasting adopted the RSS 2.0 open standard could strengthen bonds between producers and their audiences. Or, driven by commercial pressures, these technologies might be used to bring surveillance, intrusive ad tech, and monopoly to one of the last redoubts of the open Web.” PRX has announced a one-day symposium, Emerging Threats to an Open Ecosystem, to be held in February in New York NY, USA.

  • RADIO·COM has announced it is to add live and on-demand content from Radio Disney and Radio Disney Country.

  • The Video Show, an event in Washington DC, USA, has a full podcasting track on December 5. Speakers include Eric Nuzum and Melissa Monte. You can currently get in for the whole day for $49, including an exhibition hall with 80 exhibitors.

  • Australia’s Audiocraft has a nice new website. They run a podcast agency and annual festival.

  • The IAB Australia is wanting (Australian) media agencies, creative agencies and marketers to fill in a survey about your experience with audio advertising, including podcasts.

  • Radionomy, a free online radio streaming provider, is to close on 1 January 2020, shuttering over 8,000 online radio stations. Radionomy was attractive since it paid music licensing fees via Belgian music collection agency SABAM. The company have offered a free year’s Shoutcast for Business service to those affected, but added “Shoutcast does not manage broadcasting rights. It will, therefore, be up to the producer to go to the various licensing agencies in his country to pay the fees directly.” The company closed their US streams in May. The parent company owns TargetSpot, and promised to bring WinAmp back this year.

  • Why don’t many podcast apps display episode images? One tells us they’re not used very much anyway, but “once upon a time we displayed episode images throughout the app and emails but found that the consistency of the show image really helps people identify the show. Also, it means we can avoid writing out the name of the show, which saves valuable space in the app.”

  • An event: the Africa Podfest “Unconference on Podcasting 2” in Nairobi, Kenya, will be held on December 10. It’s free, and part of the lead-up to Africa Podfest next March.

  • Clarification: plays from Spotify are counted in all Libsyn accounts: they are broken out per destination for accounts paying $20/month or over (“advanced statistics”). Destination data, and IAB v2 certified figures, are not available for those with basic statistics. We meant to say that yesterday but didn’t make that very clear.
