    Stew Cornelius has joined Acast as an Account Director based in NYC. Stew has a broad background in media and has held roles at Turner Broadcasting, Hulu, and Twitter. Andrew Mongarella is a new Account Director with Acast in NYC. Andrew has spent the bulk of his career in digital audio sales with roles at SiriusXM and SoundCloud.

    Last week, Anchor hoovered up plenty of paid-for podcasts, but also lost plenty too, according to our sample. SoundCloud was the biggest loser, with 20 losses; Megaphone was the paid podcast host gaining the most shows.

    After a short hiatus, our podcast hosting company changes page has returned. As ever, it shows a significant amount of podcasts moving from paid hosting companies to Anchor. Overall, the biggest gains went to Anchor, RedCircle and Megaphone; the biggest losers were Whooshkaa, Soundcloud and Libsyn.

    80% of those abandoned podcasts are hosted on free podcast websites Anchor or Soundcloud, or Spreaker, which offers a free tier.

    Libsyn has atttracted a big hitter: The Joe Budden Podcast with Rory & Mal were using SoundCloud since their break up with Spotify, but now appear to be hosting with Libsyn. It's the #1 music show in Apple Podcasts in the US.

    In May 2018, Apple asked podcasters to switch to a secure RSS feed. "In the future, a secure feed will be required in order to access Podcast Analytics and submit podcasts", they said in an email. 30 months later, according to a recent dump of the Apple Podcasts database Podnews has been analysing, 85% of podcast feeds are now using HTTPS. The main podcast hosts that haven't switched: SoundCloud (38% of all HTTP feeds), and Feedburner (20%).

    Podcastéo has looked at the French podcast industry. In the top 200, the most popular host is Acast (who bought the French company Pippa last year), ART 19 and Soundcloud; for smaller podcasts, the #1 host is Ausha, another French company. As is the case in many emerging markets, repurposed radio material leads the charts.

    The John Dredge Nothing To Do With Anything Show calls itself a "lunatic cross between a surreal sketch show and a bizarre parody of a magazine programme", and returns for a new series five years after the last one.     The Chapo Trap House podcast makes it to Iowa City IA, USA tomorrow. The event in the Engelert Theatre is sold out. The theatre, named after a local family, has a capacity of 725. (Soundcloud)

    There were over 11,100,000 new podcast episodes in 2018. Listen Notes have developed a new "stats" page, looking into their database of podcasts (which appears to include all in Apple Podcasts). 21% of podcasts are hosted at Anchor, and a further 11% at Soundcloud, the results show. Called People of the Pod, it "examines political events, the people driving them, and what it all means for the Jewish people and Israel."     SoundCloud may have lost a co-founder this week (Jan 28), but Music Business Worldwide reports that its 2017 accounts (just filed in the UK) say that its revenue grew by 80% and topped US$100m. SoundCloud "also surpassed its full year 2018 growth plan".

    Eric Wahlforss, the co-founder and Chief Product Officer of SoundCloud - a service many podcasters use as a host - is stepping down. "This was not an easy decision to make". The company lost Alex Ljung, the other co-founder, as CEO back in July 2017.

    Podtrac contacted users of its free podcast measurement service at the end of March, writing that the service's Terms of Service had been updated to specifically prohibit certain behaviours, including "pre-loading of media files in website players". Readers may remember our investigation into iHeartMedia's figures, which uncovered exactly this in January. The company also announced that SoundCloud website plays would no longer be measured.

    Steve Wilson, who looks after marketing at Apple Podcasts, notes "friends don't let friends host their podcasts on SoundCloud" in a tweet, and recommends SimpleCast instead. He wants podcasters to use a podcast host that's designed to be a podcast host.

    The Mayor of Louisville, Greg Fischer - "the most innovative mayor in America" - has launched a new podcast - unsurprisingly, he's big news right now given The Charlottesville Thing. It's hosted on SoundCloud so, you know, be quick or you'll miss it.

    An update to Friday: SoundCloud's investors approved the emergency funding plan for the website. Alex Ljung has stepped aside as CEO (he's still Chair). Podcast hosting is not the company's core business, however, and you might still wish to find a new host.

    SoundCloud might not have very long to live: possibly less than six hours. There's a deadline of the end of today, Friday, for investors to agree with the latest rescue plan. If it's rejected, that's it: they lose the deal, and the company can't continue, says this piece.
