Podnews keeps an eye on shows moving from one podcast host to another, and it’s worth a peek every so often. Spotify for Podcasters gains a lot of shows, but has a high churn rate, losing around half the number of the shows it gains. In the last thirty days, Simplecast, Captivate and Acast are the other winners; Soundcloud, Omny Studio, Libsyn and Buzzsprout are the losers.

Always interesting to check in on our page showing podcasters switching their show to a different podcast host. Over the last thirty days, the biggest winners are Megaphone, Spotify for Podcasters, and Acast. The biggest losers are Spreaker, SoundCloud and Libsyn.

Andrew Mongarella is a new Account Director with Acast in NYC. Andrew has spent the bulk of his career in digital audio sales with roles at SiriusXM and SoundCloud.

SoundCloud has permanently banned Things You Should Ngo, says the host, the controversial writer Andy Ngô. The last episode was uploaded more than a year ago. You can still listen on YouTube, he says.

Last week, Anchor hoovered up plenty of paid-for podcasts, but also lost plenty too, according to our sample. SoundCloud was the biggest loser, with 20 losses; Megaphone was the paid podcast host gaining the most shows.

After a short hiatus, our podcast hosting company changes page has returned. As ever, it shows a significant amount of podcasts moving from paid hosting companies to Anchor. Overall, the biggest gains went to Anchor, RedCircle and Megaphone; the biggest losers were Whooshkaa, Soundcloud and Libsyn.

Within the next few months, the Facebook app will include a podcast player, as part of an upcoming set of "social audio experiences", as initially highlighted by Mark Zuckerburg in a Platformer discussion on Discord. The podcast player will work in the background, and offer live captioning; "RSS" wasn't mentioned in the release or in Zuckerburg's interview. 170 million Facebook users are already connected to a Page for a podcast, the company says. SoundCloud has signed an ad sales agreement with AdsWizz for 14 European markets. (SiriusXM owns AdsWizz and Pandora, which sells SoundCloud ads in the US; SiriusXM also owns a minority stake in SoundCloud itself.)

Libsyn has atttracted a big hitter: The Joe Budden Podcast with Rory & Mal were using SoundCloud since their break up with Spotify, but now appear to be hosting with Libsyn. It's the #1 music show in Apple Podcasts in the US.

In May 2018, Apple asked podcasters to switch to a secure RSS feed. "In the future, a secure feed will be required in order to access Podcast Analytics and submit podcasts", they said in an email. 30 months later, according to a recent dump of the Apple Podcasts database Podnews has been analysing, 85% of podcast feeds are now using HTTPS. The main podcast hosts that haven't switched: SoundCloud (38% of all HTTP feeds), and Feedburner (20%).

SoundCloud, which some use as a podcast host, released their financials for 2019. In 2019, the company lost $28.2m; an improvement from 2018, when they lost $39m.

Podcastéo has looked at the French podcast industry. In the top 200, the most popular host is Acast (who bought the French company Pippa last year), ART 19 and Soundcloud; for smaller podcasts, the #1 host is Ausha, another French company. As is the case in many emerging markets, repurposed radio material leads the charts.

Maximum Media, the owner of Irish publisher Joe·ie, has been accused of using "clickfarms" to grow the figures for its weekly business podcast The Capital B, which was hosted on SoundCloud. An anonymous video claimed the figures "jumped" by many thousands of plays overnight, and showed evidence that many of its SoundCloud users were fake. Ireland's largest media agency has suspended its contracts with the company; its founder, Niall McGarry, has now left the Irish business to focus on the company's business in the UK. Ad agencies are calling for more granular data to help spot click-fraud.

There were over 11,100,000 new podcast episodes in 2018. Listen Notes have developed a new "stats" page, looking into their database of podcasts (which appears to include all in Apple Podcasts). 21% of podcasts are hosted at Anchor, and a further 11% at Soundcloud, the results show. DAX, the audio advertising platform, has expanded its relationship with SoundCloud to now include Canada. DAX has represented SoundCloud in the UK since 2016, and launched in Canada in November 2018.

SoundCloud may have lost a co-founder this week (Jan 28), but Music Business Worldwide reports that its 2017 accounts (just filed in the UK) say that its revenue grew by 80% and topped US$100m. SoundCloud "also surpassed its full year 2018 growth plan".

Podtrac contacted users of its free podcast measurement service at the end of March, writing that the service's Terms of Service had been updated to specifically prohibit certain behaviours, including "pre-loading of media files in website players". Readers may remember our investigation into iHeartMedia's figures, which uncovered exactly this in January. The company also announced that SoundCloud website plays would no longer be measured.

Twitter has written-off most of its US$70m investment in SoundCloud, according to Variety. Their annual report notes that there's no chance in "a reasonable period" to get that money back. (On Feb 12, an Apple Podcasts marketing executive also warned podcasters off from using SoundCloud.)
