Legal trouble #2: Oprah Winfrey's company has filed a lawsuit against fan podcast Oprahdemics from Radiotopia. The filing claims that Oprah's trademarks are being misused, and that its an unauthorized attempt by the hosts to capitalise from “The Oprah Effect.” Perhaps all fan podcasts may be on dubious legal territory, given that they need to use trademarked names to make it obvious what they're about.

Oldest Podcast Guest Corner: In this hitherto light-hearted feature this week we have arrived at a 105 year-old guest who we thought might be the oldest podcast guest. A producer for Radiotopia's Radio Diaries has been in touch, pointing out that the show recorded 107 year-old Joe Newman in 2020. In an email entitled "Fact Check", we were told our feature was "inaccurate" and a correction was demanded. Here it is, oh bringer of dark clouds and extinguisher of sunlight and fun.

The Allusionist has left PRX's Radiotopia, with host Helen Zaltzman citing a lack of racial diversity at the organisation. "I have raised this fact repeatedly, recommended existing shows or potential showmakers to approach, questioned the excuses given for why the line-up stayed very white - small capacity and limited resources and insufficient money were frequently cited. So I offered money. And now, in case it makes more space and resources available, I’m removing myself." The Bugle, hosted by her brother Andy Zaltzman, left Radiotopia early last year.

RadioPublic is running an equity crowdfunding campaign. The pitch contains some good data about RadioPublic use. In an email to Podnews, CEO Jake Shapiro says this is "something I've been looking for a long while and super excited about. Ever since our first Kickstarter in 2014 for Radiotopia I've wanted to find new ways to channel that democratized marketing/engagement/community energy into each level up in our enterprise."
June 7, 2018:
An interesting promotional concept: Kaitlin Prest (The Heart/Radiotopia) is working on a new CBC podcast for release in September. She's giving the audience a separate and stand-alone glimpse into the world of the story, via email, starting today. If you're looking for "rigorous in-depth quality criticism of narrative podcasts and radio documentaries" then you probably want RadioDoc Review, which has been going since 2013. Founder Siobhán McHugh says "I founded RDR in 2013 to bring top international audio producers together with academics in order to develop (a) a canon of the best works to review and (b) a sophisticated understanding of audio storytelling, with critiques to rival those for film." An international board includes folk from Radiotopia, the Australian ABC, and UK indies. You might start with their rationale in this editorial.
