Happy International Podcast Day!

• The winners of the International Women’s Podcast Awards were announced. Our list of the winners includes judge comments and podcast hosting companies.

• After Podtrac told us that purchased podcast plays in game apps were “consistent with IAB guidelines”, the IAB’s Eric John has told Bloomberg that “the standards are in a continual state of review”. The practice has been widely criticised elsewhere.

• The feed to Kara Swisher’s former podcast Sway has been repurposed by the New York Times to now be used by tech show Hard Fork. Swisher is annoyed, Walt Mossberg is upset, as are others.

• Five editorial people from Spotify’s podcast team were laid off this month, reports Ashley Carman. The story is outside the paywall here.

• The BBC World Service has announced more than 380 potential job cuts. The broadcaster produces many popular podcasts, including the BBC Global News Podcast. The station will focus more on live news and sports; and less on standalone programmes, which are typically also produced as podcasts.

• In Delhi, India, HT Smartcast says it has achieved more than a hundred million podcast listens over the past year from more than two hundred original podcast shows.

• Simon Owens, a media commentator, writes that narrative podcasts are a bad investment for most publishers - “they’re prohibitively expensive and very difficult to monetize effectively.”

• Podcast host Castopod has added support for premium podcasts.

• Elgato has launched an XLR dynamic microphone “made for podcasters”, the Wave DX.

• Twitter is rolling out their podcast interface for Twitter Blue users on Android now; a few weeks after iOS users got it. Twitter Blue is the premium, US$4.99/month, membership program.

• Haymarket is to launch PodPod, a “new editorial brand about the craft and business of podcasting”. It promises a daily newsletter, and will be edited by Adam Shepherd, a UK journalist who joins from Dennis Publishing’s IT Pro.

Europod relaunches its podcast network today, aiming to use podcasts as a favoured and trusted channel to reach the 76.6 million podcast listeners in Europe. The network argues there is too much false or misleading information in digital environments

Radical Joy with James E. Bullard: Moments of Wisdom, Wonder, and Hope has joined the The If You Could See Me Project, a podcast network. Described as a “Southern gentleman and peddler of optimism”, the show consists of short episodes filled with inspirations, observations, and insights into how to live life more fully, and debuts on Oct 12.
