Spotify adds video to Apple TV app

Spotify’s app on Apple TV didn’t, astonishingly, have any access to video podcasts: an oversight that has been fixed today: the tvOS app now includes them, more than a year after video podcasts were rolled-out to creators. The app also now includes Spotify DJ, a feature which was launched in Feb 2023. The company says the app has been entirely rewritten.

Amazon is to cut 14,000 corporate jobs, and has warned of further cuts next year. It’s yet another set of cuts for the company: just within podcasting, it had cut 110 jobs at Wondery in August; a “small number” at Wondery in March; and closed Wondery’s entire operations in Mexico and Brazil in February. The cuts were announced before affected employees were individually told; Amazon’s share price rose 1% on the news. Apparently AI will replace some of the roles, which will be lost across the business.

First look: Ankler Media will relaunch its flagship podcast tomorrow. Ankler Agenda is to be hosted by Elaine Low, who will be joined weekly by her Ankler colleagues Sean McNulty and Natalie Jarvey, as well as expert guests. It’s part of a renewed set of podcasts from the publisher.

30% of consumption from the top 100 active podcasts come from episodes older than eight weeks, Spotify told us a few weeks ago. Headliner has launched a tool to make automatic clips for your entire back catalogue of episodes - allowing you to promote some of your evergreen content.

In Australia as part of a major media event, ARN’s iHeart Australia announced a set of new original podcasts, including a partnership with Nine networks; and a significantly enhanced podcast slate, including the chart-topping Australian True Crime, which will move from Acast. ARN also announced a distribution and sales podcast deal with Are Media, which owns many of Australia’s biggest women’s publishing brands.
- ARN launched a new iHeart Australia app with presets, a scan button, a live radio dial, and a ranker including podcasts. The US has had these features since December 2024. The app will also include significantly enhanced addressability and a “next-generation ad stack”.
- ARN is also bringing iHeart’s Ruby branded podcast studio to Australia. Ruby’s US launch was announced in May 2023. ARN also announced the launch of the iHeart Women’s Sports Network in the country, which launched in the US in July 2024.

The “new iHeart app” is also appearing in New Zealand, where NZME is the brand owner.

It used to be the rule that listeners needed to hear your ad at least three times to have results - but is that still the case? Dave Sosson of AdsWizz calls for a data-driven standard for ad frequency, suggesting that the company’s AudioPixel product will give actual results.

- “Who do you think you’re talking to?” asks The Podcast Host. It’s useful to consider who your audience is - rather than to assume blindly that your show is for “everyone”.
