- Jan 17: The IAB expects US digital advertising growth to slow considerably this year. It’s because of a lack of big events like the Olympics and elections. It’s not limited to digital ads, though - everyone is predicted to feel the pinch.
- Jan 10: Give us your money. Triton Digital’s Sharon Taylor writes her “short list of very polite demands — goals, really — for the podcast industry in 2025”. One of her demands that we’ll absolutely back her up with: that “Spotify, YouTube or Apple release useful industry data.” We’ve been asking these companies this for years (and suggesting some data points we know they have). - Jan 7: After NPR switched to using Megaphone to host its podcasts in 2023, NPR itself is no longer listed as being a podcast host that is compliant with the IAB podcast measurement guidelines.. Megaphone is v2.2 compliant.
- Dec 26, 2024: Happy Christmas to ART19, which certified to IAB v2.2 podcast guidelines on Dec 23. The IAB requires annual recertification, yet four companies still appearing in the IAB’s list were last certified in 2021 - three from iHeart (Omny Studio, Spreaker and Voxnest); and the German podcast host Audiorella.
- Dec 19, 2024: How big is the global podcast market? Justin Jackson’s research website has increased its estimates. It suggests that 2024 saw around $3-3.4bn in global ad-sales; that the hosting business is worth around $100-150mn, and that podcast events and conferences are worth $15-20mn. The estimates don’t include YouTube. Sources are given: and it’s open for others to contribute. The IAB estimated US podcast ad revenue at $1.95bn for 2023.
