Podcasts - do we have a spam problem?

• Does podcasting have a spam problem? Podcast RSS feeds are increasingly being scraped for email addresses. Today, Podnews looks at whether this is legal, and whether it’s a legitimate way for marketers to promote their services.

• The Podcast Academy has started accepting memberships. Membership is US$50 before the end of September; the membership requirements are on The Podcast Academy website.

• A new podcast app, Poddog, has launched in Japan. For iOS and Android, it allows listeners to add tags to their favourite podcasts, to help others discover them. There’s a submission form, in Japanese, on the site; it’s operated by Nippon Broadcasting System, which owns JOLF, a radio station in Chiyoda, Tokyo.

• The 2020 Latin Podcast Awards is being sponsored by Libsyn and also by Podbean, a set of press releases have announced.

• Brittany Luse, host and EP of The Nod, points out in a Twitter thread that even though the show is their idea, they don’t own “not one single percent of The Nod podcast or brand: Spotify does!”

• Edison Research did an “ask me anything about digital audio” last week. Here’s the video recording of it.

• Podcast Town is a new community for podcasters, launched by Elzie Flenard, the host of the Enterprise NOW! podcast.

• After we linked to Reza Shirazian’s sample search engine for Joe Rogan, Pete Birsinger notes that Podscribe offers a search tool through automated transcripts for many different podcasts. Here’s a search through Podnews’s audio for “Rogan” as an example.

Pushkin Industries and Axios launch their new daily news podcast today. Axios Today, hosted by Niala Boodhoo, promises a ten-minute news podcast made using a system they call “Smart Brevity”.

The Plop is a pilot of a new sketch comedy podcast for kids from Kelly&Kelly. The company has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds to produce the show which will create fifty paid gigs for Canadian comedians.

Reach - a space podcast for kids launched last week, featuring entertaining segments, fun at-home experiments, and interviews as a family friendly exploration of our galaxy (and beyond!)

As restaurants look to reopening fully, Holy Guacamole, a podcast for restaurant people, is focusing on examples and stories of restaurants that are making changes to keep going and growing.
