Kelly&Kelly Launches Kids Podcast, Using New Model to Produce Comedy

Press Release ·

This article is at least a year old

Vancouver BC, Canada—Creative production company Kelly&Kelly launched a crowdfunding campaign on Seed&Spark to raise production funds and create 50 paid gigs for comedians. Along with the campaign, they’ve released the pilot episode of The Plop, a sketch comedy show for kids.

The founders and key collaborators of Kelly&Kelly are veterans of the comedy scene, including creators of acclaimed satirical true crime podcast This Sounds Serious and Maximum Fun’s Stop Podcasting Yourself. As the impact of Covid-19 was seen infiltrating the comedy industry, the team quickly designed a project to engage diverse comedians across the globe, inspire them with a simple assignment, produce the show remotely, safely from home, and provide a paid gig. The crowdfunding campaign’s goal is to scale the production model established while making the pilot.

"With traditional journalism it’s quite common to have remote contributors, but not so much with comedy. We are excited to try out a new model. We’re entering the ‘new normal’ where shows are created remotely with talent all over the world,” said Pat Kelly, Partner and Head of Development, Kelly&Kelly.

This is the second family-friendly podcast Kelly&Kelly has launched, following the Road Trip Radio, #1 on Apple Podcast Kids & Family charts in 2017. The Plop is inspired by sketch classics SCTV, Monty Python, Mad TV and All That. With kids 7 - 12 as the key audience, sketches promote creativity and laughter during a challenging time for families. Each episode will feature a curated collection of light-hearted segments dreamed up by comedians across the globe that act as a funny, weird and informative escapism for kids. The majority of the key creative team of award winning producers are parents of kids under the age of twelve.

“Comedians are evolving to find creative new ways to earn an income and we want to contribute to build a new ecosystem for gigs. Plus, we think kids need more hilarious podcasts - now more than ever,” - Lauren Bercovitch, Head of Production, Kelly&Kelly

The Plop pilot is live and available everywhere. The Seed&Spark Campaign runs now through July 9, 2020.
