- Sep 25: In response to the federal shutdown of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, New York Public Radio is to offer its programming at no cost to public radio stations across the US. That includes shows from WNYC, Freakonomics and VOX’s Today, Explained.
- Jul 2: New York Public Radio, the owners of WNYC, released its financial returns for FY23/24. The company brought in $73.9mn (including a government grant of just $347,000), but had expenses of $83.1mn. During the year the company eliminated leadership bonuses, cut its workforce by 40 people, and cancelled Death, Sex & Money, with production ceasing in January 2024. It’s now with Slate.
- May 5: President Trump signed an executive order aiming to eliminate federal funding for NPR and PBS. Public funding for radio and TV costs the American taxpayer $1.60 a year, said New York Public Radio in a statement.
- Mar 3: New York Public Radio, the owners of WNYC, is to eliminate a further 21 full-time roles. The cuts “bring the organization into a financially sustainable position,” said CEO LaFontaine Oliver in an email.
- Jun 7, 2023: Lillian Xu is joining Vox Media as the Executive Director of the audio business. She joins from New York Public Radio. We're also told she plays pickleball, which we fondly imagined was a game played with actual pickles, probably in a bar at the end of a long night. It turns out not to be.
