- Apr 2: Buzzsprout launched free automatic transcripts for all their hosting customers using a current paid plan. Transcripts appear in Apple Podcasts, Pocket Casts, and other apps. It has a transcript editor to help fix any words before publishing, and (unlike Apple Podcasts's transcriber) will correctly identify different speakers. The company has also overhauled its chapters tool to work within the transcript editor.
- Apr 1: Today marks the launch of this year’s Podnews Report Card, our fifth annual piece of research into what podcast creators think of the platforms we all use. Previous years have uncovered significant pain points which have since been fixed by podcast platforms, including an easier method of submissions to Apple Podcasts, and control of comments about your podcast in Spotify. It takes just ten minutes to give us your views; we’ll report back in mid-May at The Podcast Show in London, and in this newsletter.
- Mar 31: Exclusive: We’ve a full list of the podcast nominees for the 30th annual Webby Awards, before anyone else. For the first time, the awards have dedicated categories for video podcasts. iHeartMedia has sixteen nominees, Audible has ten; and both SiriusXM and Wondery have six nominees each. The winners ceremony will be on May 11.
- Mar 30: Vox Media’s podcasts may be being bought by Versant, the owners of CNBC and MS NOW, suggests The New York Times. The network includes On with Kara Swisher, A Touch More with Sue Bird & Megan Rapinoe, and Stay Tuned with Preet. Speaking recently at the Podcast Business Summit, Kara Swisher advised the audience: “You should own what you make, there’s no other choice in this media environment ... entrepreneurism and media have to go together now.”
- Mar 27: More people are listening to podcasts in Japan than ever before, according to a new survey on podcast usage from Otonal and the Asahi Shimbun Company. More than three-quarters of podcast users are watching video podcasts at least once a month, says the study; the number one platform for podcasts overall is YouTube. Among younger listeners (those aged 15-29), podcast usage is bigger than Amazon Prime Video, Netflix and TikTok.
