Is better video podcasting coming to open RSS?

• Is better video podcasting coming to independent podcast apps? In a post on LinkedIn, The Podcast Standards Project says that it’s been discussing a better solution for supporting video using open RSS. The solution overcomes many of the issues highlighted by our Editor in a personal blog post last year; it might even allow dynamically-inserted video advertising, too, and it can also provide better consumption data, while being significantly cheaper to serve than existing examples.

• Apple had charts for video podcasts back in May 2017, John Wordock reminds us: he has written his confessions of a podcast chart addict.

• Podsqueeze is a new, just-launched, tool that uses AI to automatically find great clips from your podcast to share on social media.

• In July, the ABU’s Con-Fest conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, will have the host of Stuff The British Stole, Marc Fennell - how he got the idea, how it became a hit podcast, and then went onto become a hit TV show. It’s just $50 for non-ABU members.

• The UK’s media regulator Ofcom released a Podcast Survey and Audio Survey for 2025, as we reported May 22. Adam Bowie has crunched the numbers to discover more from the data; we learn that men are more likely to listen regularly to podcasts; “the biggest reason people give for stopping listening to podcasts is that they can’t find any podcasts that interest them”; and the average number of podcasts Brits listen to is 5.

• Pocket Casts v7.89 is rolling out now on the app stores. This version contains recommendations - creator-driven recommendations using Podcasting 2.0’s “podroll” feature, as well as algorithmic recommendations for all podcasts. Here’s what our daily podcast looks like - “podroll” is supported by podcast hosts like Transistor, Buzzsprout and RSS.com.

• Singapore’s 1UpMedia has produced a visualisation pilot for the BBC World Service, for the Witness History podcast. The documentary podcast’s audio was not changed; but a new visual layer was added.
