Get Into FE Teaching
Welcome to the Inspire Education Group’s “Get into FE teaching” podcasts – Episode 1 – Teach your Trade and the Capacity Building project and Episode 2 – Turning Point Internship and Share your Skills, Transform Lives. The Inspired Education Group (IEG) consists of Peterborough College, Stamford College, and University Centre Peterborough.
The “Get into FE teaching” podcasts are the result of a successful capacity building project recently delivered by IEG from January to July 2022. IEG received funding from the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority to attract industry experts to the world of FE teaching, to embrace emerging technologies and green skills and to widen continued professional development for staff through collaborative working partnerships with employers and key stakeholders.
The focus of the project to “think outside” the box to develop recruitment strategies by being innovative and creative. The project brief lent itself to being tailored and customised to the requirements of the organisation, to tackle technical skills shortages in industry, promoting employment in teaching/tutoring and upskilling/re-skilling current staff through continued professional development. By adopting creative and innovative approaches/processes IEG ran recruitment campaigns, events, workshops, and programmes to tackle the skills shortages in both course delivery and on-going staff recruitment.
IEG recognises that to attract highly skilled tradespeople into the world of teaching, it needs to offer flexible working options, training packages to suit individuals, as well as promoting more widely the benefits of working for IEG such as additional holiday entitlement, a generous pension scheme and progression opportunities. FE teaching cannot and will not compete with industry on wages.
In February, IEG launched the “Teach your Trade” campaign which opened the doors to industry experts teaching their trade to the next generation workforce. In March, IEG embarked on its first Turning Point Internship funded by Growth Works with Skills aimed at industry experts who were at a crossroads with their careers and looking to try something new. This gave the Intern the opportunity to “try before they buy” or train in a new career within teaching and to explore the wealth of opportunities available within the college.
Recognised as an empathetic and flexible employer, IEG offers a range of pathways and routes into FE teaching acknowledging that people enter the world at FE at different times in their lives, for a host of reasons, with a range of perceptions and expectations. EG is committed to ensuring that the students, teachers, industry experts, employers and key-stakeholders are supported by employing an eclectic mix of people who are highly skilled and experts within their sectors. Work is inter-generational and passing on skills and expertise to the next generation is key to not only consistency and continuity but also to ensure that the workforce of the future is as skilled and expert as those that have gone before. Embracing digital skills, flexible working and seeking to recruit experts with technical skills will enable IEG to offer the best teaching and learning experience for all.
Expanding communication channels and embracing digital technologies to advertise events and job vacancies through different social media platforms has been transformational. Using a range of platforms such as online publications, videos and podcasts as well as social media channels has enabled IEG to reach a much wider audience (tens of thousands of people)
