وقتی در حباب رونق و شکوفایی غرب بزرگ شوی بیش‌ترِ بزرگ‌تر‌ها به تو خواهند گفت که کشورهای فقیر به این دلیل فقیرند که اقتصادشان «ضعیف» است ــ بماند که معنای این حرف چیست. آن‌ها این را هم خواهند گفت که فقرای جامعه‌ی خودت نیز به این دلیل فقیر هستند که چیزی برای فروش ندارند که دیگران واقعا بخواهند ــ خلاصه این‌که آن‌ها چیزی برای عرضه به بازار ندارند. به همین دلیل است که تصمیم گرفتم درباه‌ی چیزی به نام اقتصاد با تو حرف بزنم: در جهان تو و من هر بحثی در این باره که چرا برخی افراد فقیرند در حالی که برخی دیگر پول‌شان از پارو بالا می‌رود، یا حتی این‌که چرا انسان دارد کره‌ی زمین را نابود می‌کند، حول چیزی می‌چرخد که به آن اقتصاد گفته می‌شود. و اقتصاد به چیزی ربط دارد که به بازار معروف است. اگر می‌خواهی سهمی در آینده‌ی انسان داشته باشی، نمی‌توانی وقتی کلماتی مثل «اقتصاد» و «بازار» گفته می‌شوند خودت را به آن راه بزنی و بی‌محلی کنی.
