När skaparen av dagens BNP-begrepp, Simon Kuznets, presenterade sitt förslag inför USA:s kongress ville han inte att den finansiella sektorn skulle räknas med. Detta då han ansåg att denna sektorn av ekonomin inte bidrog till något till samhället - tvärtom ansåg han att den finansiella sektorns verksamhet var negativt för samhället.
Ändå har den finansiella sektorn idag nästintill oinskränkt makt över den reella ekonomin (dvs riktiga företag och löntagare som de facto bidrar till landets välstånd i form av varor och tjänster).
