À la fin du XXème siècle, l’érosion des religions consacrées laisse la place à de nouvelles croyances qui prospèrent sur le terreau des utopies et des contre cultures. On cherche alors dans un ailleurs cosmique des réponses à des questions éternelles : qui sommes nous ? où allons nous ? Quelle est la voie du bonheur ? C’est dans ce bouillonnement spirituel qu’apparait une nouvelle figure aussi inquiétante que charismatique: celle du gourou. A la fois prophète, messie et guide initiatique le gourou entend apporter la vérité à ses disciples qui le vénèrent tel un Dieu vivant au sein de leurs sectes. Mais entre manipulation mentale, détournements financiers, abus sexuels, sacrifices humains et suicides collectifs les desseins des gourous, loin du paradis promis à ses fidèles, se révéleront infernaux.
