Es sabido que el concepto de acompañamiento espiritual es muy contemporáneo, en el siglo XVI, lo natural para quien ejercía el oficio de esclarecer las vías del Espíritu a otros era el término confesor o maestro de espíritus, quienes en otros momentos de la historia también llevaron el nombre de directores espirituales.
Teresa necesita incursionar en este medio de saberse dirigida, dadas las experiencias místicas y los fenómenos que está viviendo y que escapan a su entendimiento, o bien, de los cuales necesita hacer un discernimiento; por ello toma clara conciencia de que otro le ayudará a discurrir la senda por la que Dios la lleva; pero de algo está muy segura, sus manifestaciones son de Dios, aunque en momentos también llegará a titubear.
