Ondergronds Verleden

Op 6 april 1945 werd Stephanus Middelhoff gefusilleerd door de bezetters als represaille voor de dood van een Duitse soldaat. Op datzelfde moment zat zijn broer Jan ondergedoken op het eiland Texel en brak daar de opstand van de Georgiërs uit. Jan kwam ongedeerd uit deze strijd, maar toen hij thuiskwam, bleek zijn broer te zijn vermoord.

In onze familie was er weinig aandacht voor de fusillade van mijn oudoom Steph. Maar rond 4 mei 2020 vonden mijn vader en ik een artikel dat onze perceptie van de gebeurtenissen volledig omdraaide. Er volgde een zoektocht naar het verzetsverleden van oom Steph en opa Jan, maar we hadden niet kunnen denken dat we zoveel zouden ontdekken. Was oom Steph een held? Wat is het belang van behoud van een persoonlijke geschiedenis? En voor wie doe je dat eigenlijk?
