“The Saint” was a popular adventure radio program in the United States, based on the character Simon Templar, created by author Leslie Charteris. Simon Templar, also known as “The Saint,” was a suave, swashbuckling, and often witty “Robin Hood” type who fought criminals while staying a step ahead of the police.

The radio program had several iterations on different networks:

Early runs: The Saint first appeared on radio in 1940 in a six-episode series in Ireland on Radio Athlone, starring Terence De Marney. In the United States, the program began in January 1945 on NBC with Edgar Barrier in the lead role. Later that year, it moved to CBS with Brian Aherne as The Saint.Vincent Price’s iconic portrayal: The most memorable and longest-running radio incarnation of The Saint began in July 1947, primarily starring Vincent Price. Price’s portrayal is widely considered the definitive radio version, bringing a unique charm, wit, and sophistication to the character. He played the role across CBS, Mutual, and NBC until May 1951.Other actors: Other actors who briefly played Simon Templar in the radio series included Tom Conway (brother of George Sanders, who played The Saint in films) and Barry Sullivan.Supporting cast: Notable supporting actors included Louise Arthur as Patricia Holm (Templar’s assistant), Lawrence Dobkin as Louie (the cab driver), John Brown as Inspector Fernack, and Ken Christy as Hoppy (Templar’s sidekick).

The show was known for its engaging plots, adventures, and Templar’s distinctive flair and moral compass, often accompanied by a whistling theme and footsteps as an opening.
