- Sep 19: Will Jimmy Kimmel’s cancellation affect podcasting? In the US, the owner of a large number of ABC affiliates, Nexstar, said it would no longer take Jimmy Kimmel’s late night show. (The company is currently in the middle of a $6.2 billion takeover of rival broadcaster Tegna, which needs approval from the US government). Brendan Carr, the chairman of the country’s media regulator the FCC, clarified in an interview that podcasting is not required to serve the public interest; but “broadcast TV is different”. ABC said that they would indefinitely suspend its production.
- Jan 28, 2021: Tegna, a TV network in the US, has bought the Locked On Podcast Network, which claims to make more than 600 podcasts a week and delivered 80m downloads in 2020. Terms of the deal were not disclosed for this one either.
