PodcastOne: 'Podcasting to grow to $5-10bn through video'

• Podcasting is growing fast, according to LiveXLive CEO Robert Ellin. Speaking on Fox Business alongside Adam Carolla, the PodcastOne owner reckons the future for podcasting is in video, and told Stuart Varney that podcasting “will be $5-10bn in the next 5-7 years”.

• Writing in his personal blog, Transistor’s founder Justin Jackson says podcasting’s slow and steady growth is just right; and suggests that many investors fundamentally misunderstand the medium.

• Triton Digital has released its latest US Podcast Report, covering December 2020. Total downloads for the top 10 publishers slumped by almost 10% during the holiday month; NPR remains at #1. An incomplete ranker, it measures participating publishers only (and notably, not iHeartRadio).

  • Jagran Media has signed with Triton Digital to power distribution and monetisation of its podcasts. Jagran is “India’s fastest growing digital news platform”, and has 79.7m monthly users.
  • The company has also launched a comprehensive audit function, so you know who messed up that last upload.

• SoundOn, a podcast platform in Taiwan with 35m monthly downloads, has been acquired by investors. It’s said to be Taiwan’s largest podcast platform with 70% market share. “The details of the deal were not disclosed”.

• Tegna, a TV network in the US, has bought the Locked On Podcast Network, which claims to make more than 600 podcasts a week and delivered 80m downloads in 2020. Terms of the deal were not disclosed for this one either.

• Blubrry has added play tracking with advanced stats, allowing you to know where listeners are skipping or stopping listening. The data is valid for listens on the Blubrry player.

• Storyboard, a private podcasting service, has launched a version for iPad.

• Season three of Serial, the one examining the Cleveland justice system, is to be made into an HBO television series.
