Latest news
- May 15: Spotify's Megaphone, and Spotify for Creators, are to support video for podcasts published on Apple Podcasts. The two companies were the only large podcast hosts not to announce support for HLS video when Apple announced it earlier in the year. No pricing has been given. It doesn't change how video works on Spotify, however: the company still requires videos to be uploaded directly for playback on the Spotify app.
- May 5: Megaphone is switching to use Spotify Ad Server from mid July, allowing new formats of ads including video. Third-party serving via VAST is being removed entirely. As part of this transition, Megaphone has made a number of changes to its promotions booking tool, including limiting promotional audio files to a maximum of 60 seconds. Pre-booking on this new system starts on May 15.
- Apr 22: Italian culture podcast Italian, for sure is now available in video on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube. Host Catrin Skaperdas says that the podcast has switched from Megaphone to ART19 to take advantage of video on Apple Podcasts.
- Apr 6: All top-10 podcast hosting companies now support HLS video, with one exception: Spotify for Creators/Megaphone. (Users of Triton Digital’s Spreaker can upgrade to Omny Studio). Most of these hosting companies, however, are not publishing pricing for video hosting, and support appears to be invite-only.
- Mar 25: The absence of support from Spotify/Megaphone at launch may mean that many users won’t see the shows they’re expecting in video within the app (including shows like Joe Rogan and The Ringer titles); Apple says more content will roll out throughout the year. John Spurlock reports just 48 shows available in video at launch; the majority with Acast.
