How to support the value you get from a podcast with ‘streaming sats’

A growing number of podcasts are being financially supported by a new technology called “streaming sats”, as part of work called Podcasting 2.0.

As you listen to your favourite podcast, you can support it by paying a small amount of money every minute. This allows you to make small payments - as little as a fraction of a cent - as you listen.

New podcast apps, like Fountain, Podverse or Castamatic support these payments. Here’s a full list of supporting apps.

These apps also support “boosts”, a way to give podcast creators more money. You can send a message with your payment, too.

Most of these apps let you put money from your credit card into a wallet on the app, to help transfer money to your favourite podcasters. In order to keep payment costs down (which can be as high as 30c for each payment normally), the system uses a 'satoshi’ as a token value. A satoshi is a tiny fraction of a Bitcoin, but don’t worry: this doesn’t turn you into an cryptocurrency investor. It’s just a way of making small payments over the internet without the payment costs.

Podnews marks podcasts you can support in this way, like the Podnews Daily or the Podnews Weekly Review, in our podcast pages. Just look for the mention of value4value, and the § symbol.

We’ve written lots more information in our guide for podcasters about streaming sats.
