One click to get into 16 podcast directories

playListen · · 4.7 minutes to read
  • Over 70% of active podcasts aren’t in all the podcast directories that they could be. That’s the surprise discovery by podcast host Buzzsprout: which has redesigned its directory submissions process to add your podcast to 16 directories in just one click. In the two weeks since launch, the company says that more than 5,200 Buzzsprout podcasts have added at least one directory where they weren’t listed before.

  • East Coast Studio was just celebrating its Cassette Culture podcast’s finalist spot in the UK’s Independent Podcast Awards, when Spotify pulled the entire podcast from its platform - for ten weeks. Why? Spotify pulls shows with lots of music - even if you have a licence (it’s in the terms) - and Spotify’s robots disagreed with the music in just one episode of this show, yanking the whole lot. Host Martin Franklin warns us not to rely on one particular platform: and be careful which embedded players you use.

  • YouTube did us all a favour”, says Dan Granger, discussing the recent changes to its play metric on his LinkedIn page. “It felt like a kick in the pants,” he said, but he added “by introducing a fresh load of chaos and confusion into the marketplace, they’re inadvertently proving exactly why we need across-the-board standardized metrics.” Meanwhile, Dan Misener suggests that the new YouTube play metric has essentially doubled the numbers, according to data seen by Bumper.

  • Medical doctor and research scientist Dr Gil Carvalho has produced a detailed YouTube report about, in his words, how “health information in Diary of a CEO is consistently wrong and unbelievably dangerous”. He praises the fact-checking, placed on-screen and in PDFs for some shows - which can contradict the claims made by the guest. But, he suggests that links to the PDFs are buried in descriptions, and that audio listeners do not get to see the on-screen corrections. Carvalho also suggests that misleading claims are clipped and used as separate videos without a link to the fact check that debunks them; and that promotion of these claims, including affiliate revenue from books, is a revenue earner for DOAC.

    • FlightStory, DOAC’s producers, don’t agree: and told Podnews: “In the last 30 days, 88.3% of DOAC audiences watched the content while only 11.7% listened via audio only. Although audio listeners do not see the on-screen Community Notes, the independent research is linked directly from the relevant episode show notes. The suggestion that DOAC knowingly profits from misinformation is false. The show has invested significantly in a fact-checking process designed to give audiences greater context and transparency.”
    • In the video’s comments, we’ve fact-checked a claim from Carvalho that “two-thirds of people are listening to the audio”. Carvalho has misread the figures he shows onscreen. Pesky fact-checkers.
  • Learning and networking platform Podground has announced its third and final creator micro-grant for independent podcasters. You’ve until Sep 12 to apply; there’ll be two $500 micro-grants to support creative development, production, hosting and promotional needs.

  • Transom Story Lab’s Transom 25 event is so successful, it’s sold out of all-access festival passes, in spite of being up against Podcast Movement this year. The event is in Woods Hole MA, and will feature Ira Glass and Martine Powers, along with Nichole Hill and Al Letson. Some individual tickets are still available if you live locally. (Or even if you don’t!).
