The Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2021 was released this morning. The most valuable international data available, it gives podcast consumption figures for 20 countries in a comparable manner, and says 31% of people (302 million) accessed a podcast in the last month: a similar number to 2020. It also says that the platform mix is changing, with Spotify overtaking Apple in some markets. (Here’s our take on that).

Facebook’s launch of podcasts within their app was slow to appear yesterday. Buzzsprout has been able to see it: Alban Brooke sharing its Facebook page with a 'podcasts’ tab visible, which shows a list of episodes but which don’t play yet (though you can leave excellent comments there). It’s confirmed to not work outside the US: in Australia, they can’t see the Podcasts tab at all.

YouTube “mistakenly” suspended Bandrew Scott’s Google account for spam, locking him out of all his YouTube accounts for a while. The microphone reviewer is now back: but, as our look at YouTube’s terms of service makes clear, YouTube/Google can terminate your Google account in full if they think you’ve done something wrong. Opening a separate Google account for publishing on YouTube might be a good plan.
