Listen · · 5.7 minutes to read
  • After he leaked his earnings himself in June, it’s official - this year The Joe Budden Network has earnt more than $1mn/month on Patreon from podcasting, according to a (susbcription-needed) feature from The New York Times. The network has around 70,000 paying subscribers. Budden is the top earner on Patreon, who told us that Joe shared the level of his earnings “to make a broader point: it’s possible for creators to maintain control over their IP and audience, stay independent, and still build massive, sustainable businesses on Patreon”. The network also earns “several million” from advertising.

  • How private are Apple Podcasts listening analytics? As you’d expect from Apple - very private. In a new blog post, Apple says it deliberately applies noise and minimum thresholds to protect individual user identities. What happens on iPhone stays on iPhone, as the poster said in 2019.

  • Nielsen says that YouTube posted a new record of 12.8% of all TV usage in the US, partially driven by school-aged audiences. Netflix also benefited from this annual summer increase, reaching the #3 slot for the first time. The data is also affected by the lack of sports during June.

Moves and hires

  • Edith Chapin is to leave NPR. She is Senior Vice President and Editor in Chief. Chapin also currently acts as Chief Content Officer, overseeing reporting, radio shows and podcasts. The resignation comes days after Congress voted to strip public media of federal funding, but it’s reported she made the decision two weeks ago.
