After our piece about Spreaker last week, which appears to be enabling its users to steal other podcasts to earn money, the weekly Podcast Index catalog snapshot (and our specific query for Spreaker shows) indicates that Spreaker has managed to clean up just 72 shows from its list. There are now 1,706 shows in Apple Podcasts from Spreaker that are also available on Apple Podcasts from another podcast hosting company; including podcasts originally from NRJ, History Hit, NBC News, Audacy, Vox Media and more. The iHeart-owned company appears to be doing little to clean up its act (hardly surprising: they earn 41% from the advertising they inject into stolen shows).

Additionally, recognising that this behaviour isn’t unique to Spreaker, the Podcast Index has produced a set of data highlighting “lookalike” feeds throughout its catalog. There are plenty of daily CSV files for podcast hosts to import and use as part of any anti-piracy action (should they show willing). This web page looks at top shows that are likely copies - shows that share the same title and number of episodes, but are slightly longer (because they have more ads stuffed in them). Of the top 500, more than 290 of them are with Spreaker. In this data, we see copies of podcasts on Spreaker that were originally from the BBC, Double Elvis and iHeart, the New York Times, CBC, Barstool Sports, NPR, Audiochuck, and plenty of others.
