Oxford Road Reveals That The Best-Selling Podcasts Are Independent

Press Release · Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, United States, United States · via Oxford Road ·

Oxford Road announces “ORBIT’s Top Performing Independent Podcasts” – its latest podcast rankings based on actual sales results, drawing from $1.6 billion+ in campaign data across 500+ advertisers.

In podcasting’s early days, independent voices dominated the medium. And when it comes to performance, that’s still the case.

In line with its recent Indie PaC Awards at SXSW, Oxford analyzed the top podcasts, revealing that a surprising amount of the top ranking shows (according to ad performance) are independent. In fact, 80% of top-performing podcasts are produced outside major networks. These are creators who own their audiences, cultivate deep community trust, and deliver measurable results for advertisers, yet are enormously undervalued.

Across the analysis, four podcast audience lanes consistently emerged: “Build,” “Align,” “Unwind,” and “Fandom” – each with their own set of valuable insights.

The top findings:

  • “Build” – Some Assembly Encouraged: 40% of top shows were in the “Build” lane (including Education, Entrepreneurship, Business, and Self-themed shows). “Build”  listeners are trying to improve outcomes in measurable ways, so they’re extra-motivated to act. Instead of passively taking in information, they’re engaging with it. Similar to ORBIT’s participatory sports show findings, active audiences boost response rates.

  • “Align” – Hot Takes Welcome: Opinionated shows created engaged audiences. 27% of the rankings went to “Align” (Politics, Government, and Entertainment News-themed shows). Independent shows can stay opinionated because they don’t answer to anyone but themselves. While some brands might need to tread carefully, if the fit is right, the performance will follow.

  • “Unwind” – It’s Story Time: “Unwind” (Comedy, Comedy Interviews, History, and Documentary-themed shows) represents over 1/4 of the rankings. The throughline? A specific show vibe and great storytelling. For brands that thrive in these spaces (think lifestyle and premium goods), this independent Unwind” lane should be your next stop when you’re ready to scale.

  • “Fandom” – Above All: Our top overall performer is a Games show (Critical Role), proving that “Fandom” is in a class of its own. Deep community identity creates audience-host bonds and massive response rates for brands. These aren’t regular ad reads. Treat “Fandom” placements as if you’re sponsoring a community and let the hosts shape the endorsements how they see fit.

“People don’t think of independence as a performance advantage, but that’s exactly what ORBIT shows. Creators who own their audience and control their content build the kind of trust that drives results. 80% of the top performers are independent. The data caught up to what we’ve been seeing.” said Kyle Jelinek, VP of Client Services of Oxford Road.

Oxford’s Measurement Advantage

Findings were surfaced using ORBIT (Oxford Road Benchmark Intelligence Tool) – built on the industry’s largest index of podcast advertising performance data. The system measures actual customer acquisition costs, return on ad spend, and sales results from real campaigns. Oxford Road has processed more podcast advertising performance data than any other agency, creating an index that normalizes results across different advertiser goals and verticals.

For performance marketers, the tool enables advertisers to de-risk initial buys, optimize faster, and find high-performing shows before they become expensive.

Oxford Road will continue to release new ORBIT rankings monthly, covering categories including genre-specific performance, international markets, emerging shows, and vertical-specific results. Each ranking draws from Oxford Road’s proprietary database of campaign outcomes across podcasting, streaming audio, terrestrial radio, and creator-based video.
