Karl Skomager forsvandt pludselig fra jordens overflade i 1964. Efter kort tid henlægger politiet sagen. Rygtet går at Karl Skomager er stukket af til udlandet med en ung elskerinde. Først 12 år senere sker der noget i sagen, da den havner på bordet hos en ung advokatfuldmægtig, Morten Wagner.
