Producer, Switched on Pop
A full time position
Fully remote: working with a USA-based team at Vox Media.
WHO WE ARE Switched On Pop is Vulture's podcast about the making and meaning of popular music. Vulture, New York Magazine’s culture and entertainment site is part of Vox Media, the leading modern media company. We guide our audience from discovery to obsession. We inspire essential conversations about what’s now, what’s next, and what’s possible.
As a community of journalists and storytellers, business professionals, creators and technologists, we believe it is a moral and business imperative to amplify voices: to cultivate diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout our organization and media. This applies to our candidates, our teams, our storytelling, our creative work, and our platforms, products, and partnerships.
WHAT YOU’LL DO Switched On Pop is looking for a full-time producer/reporter. This will be an on-mic role, assisting on weekly episodes and producing on average one originally reported episode a month. The show operates in multiple formats: long form narrative, explainer, criticism, interview, and extemporaneous analysis. You should be comfortable adapting the format of a piece to match the subject.
Responsibilities include every step involved in producing a weekly podcast:
- Find creative and new ways to tell stories about popular music
- Listen extensively to new music releases and follow music news
- Scan press releases for unique angles
- Generate original story ideas
- Research and assemble interview prep
- Source, book and interview original and diverse experts and guest
- Write outlines/scripts
- Record audio in the field, in studio and remotely
- Edit audio in Descript and ProTools
- Fact check and QA episodes
- Write episode descriptions and adapt episodes into short articles for Vulture
- Promote episodes and communicate with our listeners via social media
- Work as a small and collaborative team to produce
WHO YOU ARE The ideal candidate already knows how to write and mix an audio story, but we’re open to creative applicants without audio experience. We’re looking for someone with a demonstrated ability to identify and structure a surprising story. As part of a small team, you will have substantive creative input on the direction and sound of the show. It’s most essential that you have an open ear and an open/journalistic approach to listening to a wide body of music. The show thrives on focusing on what makes music work, why it matters and who it connects with rather than opinion of whether it is good or bad. You bring:
- 3+ years experience in podcast or radio production or other media
- A portfolio that demonstrates consistent work product and inventive approaches to storytelling
- A deep musical background across multiple genres (expertise in Hip-Hop, Latin, K-pop and/or Global music a plus)
- Excellent project management skills able to independently work on multiple stories at a time
- An ability to listen on multiple levels: the story arc, the scene, and cuttable utterances
- Ability to book hard to contact, sometimes reluctant interview subjects
- Experience sourcing and reporting feature-length, narrative material
- Demonstrated ability to record and conduct long-form audio interviews that cut down into compelling stories
- Active engagement with popular music and internet culture
- A strong understanding of journalistic ethics and fact checking
- Expertise in at least one digital audio workstation is preferred
- If you think you have what it takes, but don't meet every single point in our job posting, please apply with a cover letter to let us know how you believe you can bring your unique skills to the Vox Media team or get in touch! We would love to have a chat and see if you could be a great addition to our team. We’ve hired chefs who became editors, DJs who became UX designers, and sommeliers who became writers.
