Part-time Producer, What the F*** Is Water? (Upper Middle)
Upper Middle is a newsletter about the professional-managerial class: the habits, anxieties and status games of semi-rich, time-poor Americans, told through reader survey data. We’re launching a companion video podcast, What the F*** Is Water? The short pitch is Planet Money for social dynamics.
The show is hosted by Andrew Burmon, founder and editor-in-chief of Upper Middle and author of How to Be Upper Middle Class (Hachette, 2027), and Pam Geist, brand innovation director at ESPN. Andrew previously produced Finding Fred, a 2020 Peabody nominee.
The show
Episodes are about 35 minutes, on video, released every two weeks on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube. Each episode has three segments: A news-pegged conversation about current social dynamics. Data from Upper Middle reader surveys. An interview with a cultural figure or scholar.
What you’ll do
Book guests: outreach, scheduling, prep docs and day-of logistics. Run recordings, both remote (e.g. Riverside) and occasionally in person. Edit audio and video into a finished episode. The visual style is casual and we don’t need polish, just clean multicam cuts and a few short clips per episode. Publish to Apple, Spotify and YouTube via Beehiiv, including show notes. Keep a simple production calendar and guest tracker.
What we’re looking for
You’ve produced an interview podcast before, ideally one with a video component, and can show us episodes. You’re comfortable running a show end to end with light supervision. You’re based in New York City or northwest Connecticut (Litchfield County or nearby). Most of the work is remote, but we want someone who can occasionally be in the room.
Terms
Part-time contract, about $2,000 a month. Starting as soon as possible.
To apply
Email andrew@uppermiddle.news with “Producer” in the subject line. Include links to two or three episodes you produced and a few lines on what you did on each (booking, editing, video).
Please mention podnews.net in your application.
