Podcast Audio Producer & Editor
A part time position
Fully remote: working with a USA-based team at The Nocturnists.
Salary range: $30.00 to $50.00 (hourly rate) - subject to experience
The Organization
The Nocturnists is an award-winning medical storytelling podcast that explores the human side of medicine through authentic, personal stories from healthcare workers. Founded in 2016 by physician and writer Emily Silverman, the show has grown into a critically acclaimed platform known for its narrative series, intimate one-on-one interviews, and occasional live events. Whether spotlighting frontline voices or hosting conversations with thought leaders in science, ethics, technology, and culture, The Nocturnists invites reflection on the emotional complexity of healthcare and the broader forces shaping the field. Our work has been recognized by the Webby, Anthem, and Ambie Awards; archived by the U.S. Library of Congress; and featured in The New York Times and NPR.
The Role
We’re looking for a versatile and creative US-based Podcast Producer & Editor to join our small, fast-moving team. This role is perfect for someone who’s equal parts storyteller and technician—someone who can shape conversations into tight, compelling episodes that respect the listener’s time, as well as cut raw audio with precision, and craft smooth musical transitions that hit just right. You should have strong narrative instincts, solid audio editing skills (Pro Tools, Audacity, Hindenburg, Descript, or similar), and a passion for turning good audio into great audio. We're after a jack-of-all-trades who thrives in a collaborative environment, brings sound design skills and editorial savviness, and is oriented to details such that every second of audio counts. Specifically, the person in this role would own and run our Conversations series—episodes where physician host Emily Silverman interviews authors, filmmakers, storytellers, and thought leaders in healthcare and beyond. These are intimate, story-driven conversations (sometimes one-on-one, sometimes roundtable) that demand a strong editorial sensibility, and ear for pacing. You should be confident shaping interviews into tight, compelling episodes, cutting for clarity and impact, and weaving in music and transitions that elevate the listening experience. This is a hands-on role for someone who can take raw audio and run with it—structuring, editing, and polishing in a lightly collaborative process with our Host, Emily. If you're a narrative-minded audio pro who values depth, flow, and a well-placed music cue, we’d love to work with you.
Key Responsibilities
1. Pre-Production & Recording Support
- You’ll play a key role in setting the stage for great recording sessions. Before each interview, you’ll help prepare and test our recording tools (we use Zencastr, Zoom, Otter.ai, and editing platforms like Pro Tools, Audacity, and Hindenburg).
- You’ll work closely with our host and guests—many of whom are new to remote recording—guiding them through mic setup, checking sound quality, and patiently troubleshooting any tech hiccups that arise.
- During recording sessions, you’ll be in the (virtual) room, monitoring audio in real time, flagging issues, and ensuring we capture the cleanest, richest sound possible. Your calm presence and tech know-how will make every guest feel supported and set up for success.
2. Editing & Mixing
- After the recording, you’ll take the raw audio and shape it into a strong rough cut. This means making thoughtful editorial decisions—trimming sentences or entire sections when needed, cutting out filler words, stumbles, and distractions, and tightening the conversation for clarity, flow, and emotional impact.
- You’ll also add in music cues and transitions, as well as the intro and outro once they’re recorded by Emily. After 1-3 back-and-forth revisions with Emily, usually conducted on Google docs, you’ll lock the cut.
- From there, you’ll sweeten the sound—balancing levels, EQing voices for warmth and clarity, applying compression and noise reduction, and ensuring everything meets broadcast-quality standards. Throughout, you'll help uphold The Nocturnists’ signature tone and pacing, delivering an episode that feels polished, immersive, and listenable.
3. Collaboration, Workflow & Final Polish
- In addition to working closely with our host, Emily, you’ll be working with Ashley, our program manager, who oversees logistics like mic shipping, guest scheduling, and episode prep.
- You’ll be responsible for keeping our workflow smooth and efficient—maintaining clean file structures, naming conventions, and hitting draft deadlines to keep us on track for release.
- Before each episode goes out the door, you’ll also do a final listen to catch any lingering glitches, inconsistencies, or audio mismatches. Occasionally, you may assist with pickups or pull selects for promotional use.
- On the backend, you’ll help us stay technically organized—tracking music cues, plugin settings, and documentation to ensure consistency across episodes, while keeping an eye on evolving best practices in podcast production.
Qualifications
- We’re looking for someone with a solid foundation in podcast production—experienced enough to work independently, but still eager to grow.
- Ideally, you have at least 2-4 years of hands-on experience editing narrative podcasts, radio, or similar formats, with a strong command of tools like Pro Tools, Audition, Hindenburg, or Descript, plus transcription services and audio plugins.
- You have a sharp editorial ear for pacing, story flow, and clarity, along with technical fluency in EQ, compression, and mastering.
- You’re a clear, proactive communicator who thrives in a remote, collaborative environment, and you have a reliable internet connection and your own editing setup.
- A genuine interest in storytelling, healthcare, or both is a definite plus.
