A part time Managing Editor position
Fully remote: working with a USA-based team at Good Tape.
Salary range: $40.00 to $60.00 (hourly rate) - subject to experience
About Good Tape:
Good Tape is an independent magazine dedicated to the craft and culture of podcasting. Our annual print issues explore a central theme — from fame to fear, disruption to delight — with curiosity, care, and a bit of subversion. In print and year-round digital, we publish deeply reported features, smart essays, criticism, interviews, and unexpected formats from change-making voices, artists, and writers.
We’re looking for a Managing Editor to help us bring our next issue to life, a role that would succeed the work of our founding editor, Alana Hope Levinson.
About the Role:
The Managing Editor is our editorial engine — part story whisperer, part project manager, and part curator. You’ll assign, shape, and shepherd stories from pitch to publication. You’ll manage timelines, coordinate with writers, and ensure the editorial voice and standards of the magazine are upheld throughout the process.
This is a great role for someone who thrives in creative environments, can balance vision with logistics and budgets, has a deep rolodex of top writers they can turn to for sharp, exclusive pieces, and wants to help build something meaningful in podcast journalism and criticism.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage the editorial calendar and keep writers and contributors on schedule
- Evaluate and respond to pitches
- Assign, edit, and provide feedback on drafts from writers
- Coordinate with our design team on deadlines and packaging
- Help maintain editorial consistency, voice, and fact-checking standards
- Support our Accounts Payable team with managing contributor invoices
- Pitch in where needed — this is a small team, and we wear many hats
Who You Are
- A thoughtful, experienced editor with strong instincts for narrative, voice, and structure
- Comfortable managing people, deadlines, and the many moving parts of a print and digital publication
- Able to communicate clearly and compassionately with a range of writers
- Familiarity with the media and entertainment, particularly podcast media
- Connected to cultural and business writers and tastemakers
- Curious, organized, and unafraid to take initiative in a flexible environment
- Excited to shape and support a unique editorial voice in a growing magazine
Bonus (but not required):
- Experience with Notion or other project management tools
- Familiarity with freelance contracts, editorial budgeting, and small editorial operations
- Interest in helping shape community partnerships and live programming
