Producer / Researcher [U.S.-based]
A full time position
Fully remote: working with a USA-based team at Center for Humane Technology .
Center for Humane Technology is looking for a self-motivated Producer/Researcher to join a small team producing the podcast Your Undivided Attention. You are a good fit for this role if you love diving deep into research and translating complex ideas for broad audiences. You are a journalist, not an academic. You have likely worked on long-form content tackling big issues - in politics, law, tech, or humanities - and you have a working knowledge of recent developments in AI. You are a team player who is adaptable and agile when deadlines shift. You can quickly and constructively incorporate editorial feedback into your work.
The key responsibility of the role is to do deep research (using books, academic papers, news searches, and pre-interviews) to create detailed interview briefs. Your briefs will include a clear interview structure, suggested questions, and draft introductions. You will attend prep meetings to brief hosts, and you will sit in on interview recordings, offering clear, actionable direction to hosts where necessary. You will contribute to the editing processes. Tasks may include but are not limited to:
- Researching and writing detailed interview briefs for hosts incorporating feedback from hosts, Executive Producer/Content Director, and Senior Producer
- Pre-interviewing guests
- Booking guests, and managing email correspondence in a timely, professional, and proactive manner
- Attending all interview recordings and offering selective direction to hosts where needed
- Audio editing of interviews using Descript
- Collaboratively working with the Senior Producer on draft edits
- Lending general editorial feedback throughout the production process
- Fact-checking episodes
- Ordering, reviewing, and posting transcripts
- Suggesting and pulling clips for audiograms and other promotional opportunities
- Attending weekly production meetings, interview prep meetings with hosts, and all recordings
- Note-taking in meetings
- Owning the podcast inbox, responding to audience inquiries, and triaging to the Senior Producer and Content Director when appropriate
- Selecting and editing promotional audiograms for social
- Pulling promotional assets together and posting to the website
- Tech and sound-checking guests for remote recordings
- Uploading the final episode to Simplecast
- Supporting the Senior Producer as required
- Provide administrative and operational support to the podcast team as needed.
- Other responsibilities, as needed
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
Ideal candidates will have some combination of the following:
- 5 or more years of experience in journalism, preferably audio production
- Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field
- Experience with interview formats
- Experience with quick-turnaround recording and production (e.g., audio journalism experience)
- Experience working with high-profile hosts
- A strong verbal and written communicator who can translate jargon into clear, conversational language
- Excellent research skills and the ability to distill complex ideas for a broad audience
- Strong (remote) audio recording skills and a good ear for sound
- Team player with a can-do attitude
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently
- Organized and deadline-oriented
- Adaptability and ability to quickly pivot when schedules and deadlines change
- High integrity
- Demonstrated understanding and engagement with the themes of Your Undivided Attention and CHT’s work
- Knowledge of and strong interest in recent developments and debates around Artificial Intelligence (technical knowledge not necessary)
- Demonstrated interest in policy, politics, ideas, society, and what makes us tick
- NOTE: Experience with Protools or similar is strongly preferred. Experience with Descript is desired but not required
CONTRACT TERMS
- Full-time salaried position
- $85,000-100,000 annualized salary, depending on experience
- This role is eligible for benefits
- Location: Remote – working to Pacific Time work hours
- You must already be authorized to work in the United States
- This role reports to CHT’s Content Director
