Your role
CBC Podcasts is a team of passionate individuals who are energetic, committed, and motivated to make premium quality work that stands out in a borderless and highly competitive podcast landscape. We are an entrepreneurial and nimble group that is growing alongside a rapidly expanding and evolving industry. We are looking for an Executive Producer to lead our Information, Entertainment & Talk series.
In this role, you’ll be leading a team of award winning journalists in the planning, conception, development and execution of our Information, Entertainment & Talk series and directly overseeing a few titles yourself. Reporting to the Director, CBC Podcasts, you will plan, direct, and co-ordinate your story teams and effectively communicate Podcasts’ strategic objectives, and oversee the development of your team.
A visionary programmer, you will originate and develop new projects, you are someone who is innovative and capable of taking our content to the next level. This role requires the highest level of creative thinking and an ability to originate and develop innovative podcasts that resonate with audiences and are critically revered.
You must also be an experienced journalist; confident and innovative; and comfortable with the high-pressure situations. You must be a strong motivational leader, capable of managing people as well as complex journalistic and legal situations.
Key Tasks: Meaningfully contribute to the Content and Business strategy for the department. Responsible for team development by providing mentorship and opportunities to personnel assigned to the production, or as assigned by management, including program and production personnel, and freelance contributors. Oversee the Information, Entertainment & Talk slate to deliver premium quality content. Plan, direct, and co-ordinate your team’s projects, effectively communicate the program or platform strategic objectives, and oversee the development of the team and its performance. Identify, develop and mentor a pool of show and series producers to help manage the growing slate. Directly oversee a small number of productions. Lead and implement a process that ensures effective vetting and story editing for series including a mix of hands-on vetting/story editing as well as assigning senior producers and producers to do this work. Seek out, identify and develop new series ideas, talent and content that can help deliver on strategy. Ensure the pitch and development process is managed effectively for Information, Entertainment & Talk titles. Support production teams in staff development, problem solving, and team building. Provide teams with ongoing feedback and through the Performance Management and Staff Development (PMSD) process.
We are looking for a candidate with the following:
Experience developing a weekly, seasonal, or serialized show. A minimum of seven (7) years of experience leading and setting the creative and editorial vision for a podcast or audio show/format. A demonstrated leadership ability to elicit, engage and integrate diverse perspectives, voices and ideas, and differing points of view in our programming is critical. Deep knowledge of best practices and CBC Podcasts’ standards for journalism and production. An innovator and risk taker who is committed to reflecting community and diversity. Proven ability to foster a safe, vibrant, creative, and inclusive team culture Demonstrated talent as an audio storyteller with fluency in pacing, tone, presentation and storytelling and an ability to vet and restructure longform narratives. Superior writing, editorial and production skills. An ability to program relevant, audience-focused stories, which reflect issues that will resonate with audiences. Demonstrated skills in the area of conflict resolution, mentoring, feedback, talent recognition and development. Proven ability to oversee expenditures and deliver programs on budget. University degree or equivalent in a related field
