Latest news
- Mar 6: The BBC responded to a UK government consultation about the renewal of its Royal Charter and how the broadcaster will be funded in coming years. “We will explore opening up BBC Sounds to UK third parties and creators”, the response claims. A brilliant idea: one the BBC trailed before the launch of BBC Sounds in 2018, press-released at launch, promoted again in its 2020/1 Annual Report, and has continued sporadically making agreements, like with Goalhanger in Nov 2024.
- Mar 3: The Podcast Show London has revealed the first fifty speakers at the event in May. Speakers include Persephonica’s Dino Sofos, founder of Goalhanger Gary Lineker, ABC Australia’s Head of Audio Jessica Radburn, Amplifi Media’s Steven Goldstein, and Sounds Proifitable’s Tom Webster. - Mar 2: UK podcast company Goalhanger claims more than three million views for “emergency episodes” covering the US and Israeli strikes on Iran. The company says it received 1.7mn YouTube views and 1.3 million podcast streams and downloads; and that people choose their shows because of their “editorial standards”. Inviting comparisons with other programme-makers, Goalhanger's release quotes average viewer numbers for individual TV news programmes.
- Feb 24: Goalhanger boss Tony Pastor spoke at MIP London, saying people are connecting with podcasts that “no commissioner at a TV station in the UK would dream of commissioning.” He added: “We realized that the closer we are to television on YouTube, the better we do”.
- Feb 10: A new show has been announced by Goalhanger - The Book Club, which "brings the historical context behind famous books to life". It's hosted by Dominic Sandbrook and his producer, Tabitha Syrett. Wuthering Heights will be the subject of the first episode (there's a new spicy movie adaptation out shortly, too).
