- Mar 24: What counts as a “play” in the analytics in Apple Podcasts Connect? According to podcast growth agency Bumper, it’s every time you hit the play button in Apple Podcasts. Pause a show to answer a call, then hit play again? That’s two plays. Take your AirPods out to ask for a coffee on your way to work, before putting them back in again? That’s two plays. No wonder a recent episode of our podcast shows 32 listeners but 232 plays! The detail appears in a piece from Bumper showing how to combine audio and video podcast data from different sources, which also reminds us that YouTube doesn’t actually tell us how it calculates a ‘play’ at all.
- Feb 13: A raw download figure doesn’t tell you whether those listeners are new, or returning. Are they people who listened once and swore to never again listen? Or are you not reaching new audiences at all? Bumper has worked out how to calculate new vs returning listeners, using first-party data within the Apple and Spotify dashboards. That data will be added to the Bumper Dashboard soon (which we reviewed last August.)
- Jan 27: Stephen “teevio” Hallgren has joined Bumper as the company’s full-time Chief Technology Officer. He was working for the company as a “fractional” CTO.
- Jan 8: How big are serialised podcasts - shows you need to start at the first episode, and listen to the last? Bumper looks at how they interact with each other, and how you might market a serialised show by reaching audiences that already listen to them - or, listen to shows that are similar.
- Sep 9, 2024: Spotify is rolling out trackable sharing links - so you know which of your links work in terms of getting you new listens. The team at Bumper have spotted this tool, which appears to be rolling out (we don’t yet see it for our shows).
