- Sep 23: A developer called Matthew Brunelle has worked out how to change the code for Pocket Casts to remove the advertising. The apps were made open-source by current owners Automattic, which makes it relatively easy (and legal) to do so. However, the app will still use proprietary Pocket Casts servers; and for now, you’ll need to be an Android developer to rebuild the app in this way. In any case, this seems to punish the company for making the apps open-source, which has accelerated a number of new features. Better to use AntennaPod or Apple Podcasts... or, better still, support the developers by paying for it, we think.
- Apr 7: Automattic, which owns Pocket Casts and Wordpress, is laying off 280 workers (16%) in a restructure. It’s unclear which units are affected. The company has been mired in drama after its owner, Matt Mullenweg, criticised WP Engine; 159 employees left the company in October.
- Dec 17, 2024: DeepCast, which makes the DeepCast podcast discovery platform and DeepCast Pro, a podcast creator suite, has secured additional investment from a set of companies and venture firms, including Automattic, the owner of WordPress and Pocket Casts.
- Mar 1, 2024: The owner of Pocket Casts, Automattic, is to sell data from posts on Wordpress and Tumblr to train AI tools, 404 Media has reported. Sites will need to opt out.

Pocket Casts sends out a regular newsletter to podcast creators, highlighting how to get featured in the popular podcast app. Here's the latest edition, and here's where to sign up for it. The company was bought by Automattic last year, and say they are "working on a rather large update at the moment".
