- May 13: Exclusive: Amazon Music begins rolling out video podcasts from today. Video podcasts will initially be available for customers in the US on iOS and Android, across all subscription tiers. A spokesperson told us: "In today’s rapidly evolving podcast landscape, video has emerged as an increasingly essential format for creators and their audiences. With more consumers engaging with video podcasts of their favorite shows, Amazon Music is introducing an integrated video podcast experience for customers, making it simpler for customers to watch a selection of their favorite podcasts without leaving the app. This early experience will help us gather valuable customer feedback to shape and enhance the experience."
- Apr 10: For podcasts, YouTube has pulled far ahead of Spotify, with Apple Podcasts in fourth place behind Amazon Music, according to new global data from MIDiA. 62% of monthly active podcast users are using YouTube, compared to 47% for Spotify and around 25% for Apple Podcasts. The only surveyed countries that Spotify appears to lead in are Australia (but only very slightly), and in Spotify’s home country of Sweden, where it has a significant lead. - Mar 4: Amazon’s choice is a bit bewildering. For $11.99 a month, Amazon Music Unlimited subscribers get access to one free audiobook from Audible each month, but no Audible Originals podcasts. Or, Audible’s Premium Plus plan is $14.95 a month, which gives one credit a month for an audiobook (ie one audiobook a month, though these credits only expire after twelve months) but no music. And you can buy a different plan, still called Audible’s Premium Plus plan, for $22.95 a month which gives you two credits a month.
