Podcast Taxonomy Consortium gives us clearer job descriptions

The Podcast Taxonomy Consortium has posted its first white paper, proposing a standard for job descriptions in podcasting. The product of five months of work, it enables all of us to know the difference between a Technical Director and an Audio Engineer, for example. They welcome further participation, especially in translations to other languages.

RedCircle has launched programmatic advertising today for its community of podcasters and advertisers. The company says it’s the only podcast host offering a complete set of monetization options including donations, subscriptions (private feed), dynamic host-read ads, and programmatic ads.

Podcast advertising barely slowed down this year, according to Magellan AI which has released The state of podcast advertising in 2020, a full analysis of the podcast ad market.
- The world’s biggest advertiser in 2020 overall was Amazon, spending $11bn. So far, Magellan AI has detected $11.6m-worth of podcast ads from the e-commerce company: up more than 55% year on year.

The Stitcher subreddit is not a pretty sight following the podcast app’s redesign. Thread titles include: “This update has altered the meaning of 'premium’”, “How can you make an update worse than the old version?” and “Rename it Shitcher”. Ouch. The Pew Research Center, a US-based “fact tank”, has released Measuring News Consumption in a Digital Era. It finds that more Americans are using podcasts to get the latest news - but also highlights the danger of a survey: several of those surveyed forgot that they listened to news podcasts until they were specifically asked about them.
