  • We reported yesterday that Hernan Lopez will leave Wondery after the Amazon deal goes through. Podnews has seen an all-staff email from Lopez to the Wondery team, part of which clarifies his next steps: “Once the transaction is complete, I will be transitioning out of the company to focus my attention on my recently announced Hernan Lopez Family Foundation, which is committed to addressing diversity in leadership both from the demand side as well as the supply side. The transaction will free up time and provide resources to make those goals possible, and I will be working with other organizations to make more meaningful progress. I will also be looking forward to what’s ahead on the professional side, but not before I take a break and have a blank slate ahead of me, which frankly, is quite exciting, especially after 30 years without one!”

    • Lopez will still be involved with The Podcast Academy, we understand. He will also be assisting the transition as a consultant with Amazon for several months.
  • The CBC has published a look back at the movers and shakers of podcasting in 2020. The Canadian broadcaster perplexingly, but pleasingly, calls us a “podcast industry watchdog”.

  • The Economist reports on “The podcasting battle to be the Netflix of audio” ($). In part, it argues that podcasts may be being over-valued because they don’t have a long-term benefit: “Will Page, a former Spotify chief economist, notes that whereas back catalogues like Bob Dylan’s, recently sold to Universal Music Group, are valuable because the songs are replayed for years, podcasts are perishable. 'A podcast about Dylan is of its time; a Dylan song is timeless,' he says.”

  • Goodbye, Adobe Flash Player. The technology was used for a time for podcast players on the web. You should uninstall it from Windows or Mac if it’s still on your computer; it’ll no longer receive security updates.

  • Spoon is a live audio streaming service from South Korea. You reward shows you like by giving them spoons, a virtual currency that they can cash out. In significant growth, earlier last year it was forecasting revenue of $100m.
