Spotify, the music company, has bought both Gimlet - and Anchor.

Gimlet Media is a polished podcast production company, based in Brooklyn. Spotify’s much rumoured acquisition of the company was only half the story - since they’ve also purchased Anchor, a free podcast publishing platform, responsible for 40% of all new podcasts.

"These acquisitions will meaningfully accelerate our path to becoming the world’s leading audio platform, give users around the world access to the best podcast content, and improve the quality of our listening experience as well as enhance the Spotify brand,” said Daniel Ek, Spotify co-founder and CEO.

“We are proud to welcome Gimlet and Anchor to the Spotify team, and we look forward to what we will accomplish together.”

The Verge are reporting further, noting that “Spotify is now planning more acquisitions for podcasts in 2019”, and the company notes it’s willing to spend around $500 million to grow its podcast business this year.
