27% of young Americans listen to podcasts every day

The latest Share of Ear study from Edison Research suggests that more than a quarter of all Americans aged 18-34 are listening to podcasts every day. Podcasting’s share of audio time has also dramatically grown. The results are quoted by Cumulus Media’s Westwood One.

In a few hours, Apple Podcasts will be publishing its “Apple Podcasts Best Of 2021”. It’ll be awarding a “Best Show of the Year” and a “Newcomer of the Year,” presenting editorially-curated lists for “Shows of the Year” and “Episodes of the Year,” and releasing new charts. There will also be Editors’ Picks and charts for Top New Shows for around 20 international markets. We’ll have all the details tomorrow. The company has just announced the winners of the Apple Music Awards.

Spotify has removed its Android “car view” feature, which allowed you to drive and listen to podcasts with a simpler user interface. You can still use Android Auto, or voice control via Google Assistant. (“Hey, Google, play the latest news from Podnews podcasting news” works a treat).

Subscriptions to podcasts may be coming to Facebook - eagle-eyed tweeter Stephen Robles has spotted a “subscribe” button in his app.

Spotify’s original podcast Geopolítica Pop, a Spanish podcast looking at international politics and global trends, is given a review in a new Argentinian newsletter about podcasts, Escucha Podcast. Pablo Fisher says the show is a little Eurocentric, but of global interest.

It’s Christmas time at Libsyn, with a number of SEC filings. New CEO Bradley Tirpak now owns $2.4m of stock, while board member Eric Shahinian now controls $17.7m of stock, around 13.4% of the company.
