The New York Times made $36m from podcast ads in 2020

The New York Times released their financial results for 2020. They made $36m in podcast ad revenue, up $7m; total advertising revenue for the business declined by 20%, though. Those numbers should increase - this year, the NYT can sell advertising in This American Life, as we reported last August.
- Meanwhile, Michael Barbaro has written to WAMU, a radio station that takes the radio version of The Daily, with a number of action points and apologies for some of the NYT’s, and his, actions around Caliphate.

Other media outlets are reporting more data on Spotify’s latest results. Spotify credits podcast popularity for 24% growth in subscribers is The Guardian's take. Last month, Citi said that Spotify’s podcast plan wasn’t working; we wonder whether they still think that.

Google Podcasts is getting a little tweak in its playback screen, reports AutoEvolution. We’re yet to see the update, which is restricted to beta users. We are, though, seeing episode images at least some of the time.

He’s quoted as saying that exclusive deals are prehistoric; yet has launched exclusive shows on Patreon. He spent two hours explaining why he was leaving Spotify, though, through the metaphor of strip clubs, stories about watches and 52 f-words, so no wonder we’re a bit f-ing confused.
